A family house shaped by twenty-five years of jade.

Our Story

TORAÉ is not a new beginning.

In 2001, the Htut family founded Tiger Jade in Myanmar, beginning a relationship with jade that would continue across more than two decades.

The work was built slowly: selecting stones, working with craftsmen, learning their color, texture, weight and character, and building relationships within Myanmar’s gemstone world.

Twenty-five years later, that history continues in Japan through TORAÉ.

Based in Tokyo, TORAÉ brings Burmese jadeite and fine gemstones into a quieter, more contemporary setting, while preserving the individuality of every stone.

The Stone

No two pieces are the same.

Jade is not uniform.

Color moves from milky white and pale celadon to lavender, moss, deep green and almost black. Veins appear and disappear. Translucency changes from one part of a stone to another.

TORAÉ does not try to erase those differences.

Many of our pieces are one of one. The piece photographed is the piece offered, selected for its own natural character rather than its ability to resemble another.

Our jade comes from Myanmar, home to the jadeite that has shaped our family’s work for generations.

Our relationship with the stone is not simply one of design. It begins with selection, provenance, people and the knowledge accumulated through years of handling jade before it ever becomes a finished TORAÉ piece.

Tokyo

A Burmese house, shaped in Japan.

TORAÉ was created to bring that Burmese inheritance into a Japanese context.

The restraint of the settings, the naming of the pieces, the way they are photographed and presented, and the attention given to a single object all reflect the environment in which the house now lives.

Myanmar gives TORAÉ its stone.

Japan gives TORAÉ another way to present it.

The House

Family before brand.

TORAÉ remains closely held and personal.

Every collection begins with the stone itself. Some become simple bead bracelets. Others become cord pieces, magatama, pendants, bangles or objects for the home.

We do not expect natural jade to repeat itself, and we do not design as though it will.

That is why so many TORAÉ pieces carry their own number, their own photograph and their own place within a collection.
